My Secret To Saving Money – I’ll admit it. Managing my family’s finances wasn’t always easy. I was unorganized – and it showed. I wasn’t keeping track of our money – or where it was going. When I finally took the time to add up all the numbers, I was shocked! There was no way we could keep going like this.
The way I saw it, I had 2 options: (1) keep burying my head in the sand or (2) be honest about what was really happening. I choose the latter. It was the only way my family could stay ahead of our debt. I knew I had to get organized. There was no way around it. We needed a budget and a way to keep all our finances together. But how?
Our answer was a Budget Binder. It’s exactly what we needed to track every aspect of our spending and debt. It also gave us the push to set financial goals for ourselves. Not only has it been our #1 budgeting tool; it’s become our secret weapon to saving money!
I knew I had to make my Budget Binder available to others struggling with getting their finances organized. It’s a great tool to make your financial life so much easier. That’s why I want you to have it. Use it to put you on the path to financial freedom.

S.M.A.R.T. Monthly Financial Goals
This page teaches you the 5 parts of S.M.A.R.T. financial goals. These goals are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, & Time-Bound. Setting financial goals in this manner drastically increases your likelihood of success. I use this page to guide me when creating my goals.
Monthly Financial Goals
At the beginning of a new month, I sit down and set financial goals that I can realistically accomplish in those few weeks. This page is super important and I can’t even tell you how much of a difference it’s made! What’s great is that it allows you to reflect on your finances month-to-month so you can figure out what to do differently the next month. It’s like a screenshot of where you stand.
Yearly Financial Goals
This worksheet gives you a place to plan your major goals for the year. Maybe your #1 goal is to save up enough money for a family vacation to Disney Land. You could estimate the total cost and settle on a date for the vacation. Your ‘why’ could be ‘spend more quality time together’. Then you figure out what action steps to take to get there. One step might be to put aside $200 from each paycheck and save it for the vacation. Or to set automatic transfers to savings in the amount of $200 every two weeks. This will help you see why you’ve cut back on spending throughout the year.
The monthly budget worksheet. Here lies the heart of your journey. Use it to easily track and calculate your income and spending. Compare what you budgeted to what you actually spent. Total the balance at the bottom. Now you know where you stand so you can tweak your budget as needed.
Monthly Bill Payment Log
Never miss another payment with the monthly bill payment log. It’s a nice visual of all your payments for the month, together in one place. Write down the bill, how much you paid, the date you paid it, the balance, and mark it with a check mark once it’s paid. Print out a new sheet each month to keep it simple.
Debt Payment Log
This has to be my FAVORITE worksheet in the entire Budget Binder. Why? Because it’s where I get to see the fruits of our labor. Before I started using the debt payment log, I never remembered month-to-month what our new principal was. I’d have to go back through previous statements to find our account number and principal amounts from earlier in the year. Not only has this worksheet made my life much easier, it brings a smile to my face when I see how much of a dent we’ve made over the year.
This calendar has been a lifesaver. It’s the only reason I was able to keep track of all the appointments I had this month. It’s been a hectic month and I relied on it heavily. Use it as a guide for events, bill due dates, and appointments. Use a new one each month and fill in the month and dates.
